In true Washington, DC "we can't handle driving in anything but overcast skies" style tonight was one of the worst traffic situations since our horrendous mess on 9/11.
It started in the 3pm hour with accidents on all of the flyover ramps on the newly rebuilt Springfield Interchange causing all lanes to be closed. This of course was brought on because the temperature stayed under the freezing mark causing the roads to ice.
There were poor souls who were stuck behind an accident on 95 South in the HOV lanes at 3:19pm (someone called in to WTOPNews) and didn't move again till 7:19pm. Yes you heard that right four hours.
I feel lucky. I took Alternate Route 67 (in my collection of "101 Ways How to Get from Work to Home." It took about 3 hours with a 15 minute stop to get gas.
I just Google Map'd my route for this evenings jaunt through Northern Virginia and I went 48.6 miles with an estimated time of 1.5 hours. The normal commute is 27.5 miles with a Google estimated time of 46 minutes.
What an evening, and tomorrow is supposed to be just as fun. Hopefully people just stay home tomorrow.
